Pressure Treated Fence

Pressure Treated Pine Fence Installation
Schaumburg IL

Comparing Cedar and Pine Fence Materials

The most common types of wooden fence materials are pressure-treated pine and cedar. If you have chosen that you want a wooden fence put on your property, you may be attempting to select between the two most popular types of wooden fence materials, pressure-treated pine and cedar. Learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of each option from our Schaumburg fence contractors in the sections below.

Advantages of Pine Fences

Pine fences are a highly popular choice for fencing, largely due to its affordability and low maintenance requirements. The majority of the pine used in fence construction is Southern yellow pine, which has been treated with chemical preservatives to protect it against weather and insect damage, as well as rot. Pressure-treated pine fences generally cost between $39 and $45 per linear foot, not counting the cost of fence installation, according to industry standards. A pine fence will cost between $5,850 and $6,750 depending on how long you need it to be (150 linear feet is the usual length for a normal residential backyard).

Pine is also more durable than cedar when exposed to soil, which makes it a better choice for fence posts than the latter. In order to combat this, many cedar fences are constructed with poles made of pressure-treated pine and planks made of cedar instead of wood.

Pine fences have a number of disadvantages.

One small disadvantage of pressure-treated pine is the way it looks after it is finished. While the chemical procedure used to increase the durability of pine results in a greenish tinge, it will fade with time and may be concealed by painting or staining the surface of the wood. Pressure-treated pine is also more prone to warping, buckling, twisting, and shrinking than cedar, and it is also more vulnerable to insect damage as a result of its treatment.

Finally, pressure-treated wood can begin to appear worn in as little as a few short years, particularly if the fence is not properly maintained on an ongoing basis. Despite the fact that they are less expensive up front, pressure-treated pine fences typically survive 20+ years – offering a superb advantage over cedar in that regard.

Advantages of Cedar Fences

Cedar is a lovely, high-quality wood that is immediately recognized by its pleasant scent and rich, reddish-brown color. Cedar is also a popular choice for furniture makers and cabinet makers. Because the wood has natural preservatives, it is not necessary to treat it with any sort of chemical. Cedar is prized for its distinctive grain pattern and color, as well as for its long life and resilience. It will typically survive longer and be more resistant to insects, mildew, weather, and rot than pine fence, and it will cost less. Cedar fencing has been known to survive for 30 years or more with proper care and upkeep.

The Drawbacks of Cedar Fences

A substantial price difference exists between cedar and pressure-treated pine. Installation of cedar fences generally costs between $45 and $60 per linear foot, depending on the quality of the wood used. For a fence with a length of 150 linear feet, the cost ranges from $6,750 to $9,500. Small picket fences are on the lower end of that price range, whereas towering privacy fences are on the higher end of that price range.

Apart from that, while cedar fences require less care than fences constructed of pressure-treated wood, they still require periodic maintenance such as cleaning or repair. If you want a fence that is as low-maintenance as possible, you might want to consider getting a vinyl or metal fence installed.
