Wood Fence Installation

Wood fences are a quintessential part of many landscapes, offering a blend of natural beauty, privacy, and practicality. They have been used for centuries across various cultures and continue to be popular in contemporary settings for their versatility and aesthetic appeal.
Historical Significance and Evolution
The use of wood for fencing dates back to ancient civilizations. Initially, these fences were primarily for demarcating property boundaries and providing basic security against wildlife and intruders. Over time, the designs evolved, with variations emerging based on regional wood availability, climate, and cultural influences. In America, for instance, the iconic “picket fence” became synonymous with the ideal suburban life, representing a sense of community and home.
Types of Wood Fences
There are numerous types of wood fences, each serving different purposes and offering unique aesthetics. Some common types include:
  1. Privacy Fences: Typically around 6 feet tall, these fences are designed to create a private space, blocking views from the outside. They are ideal for backyard or patio areas.
  2. Picket Fences: Shorter than privacy fences, picket fences are often used for their decorative appeal, marking property boundaries without obstructing views.
  3. Split Rail Fences: Known for their rustic look, these are commonly used in rural settings and are characterized by long, rough-hewn beams threaded through upright posts.
  4. Lattice Fences: Incorporating crisscrossed wood panels, lattice fences are decorative and provide partial privacy with a breezy feel.
Our fences are completely custom-built, ensuring that each fence we install meets the exact specifications of your worksite. Western Red Cedar timber contains natural oils that make it inherently resistant to deterioration. Western Red Cedar is an excellent choice for outdoor fence.

All oil-based staining products are compatible with our fence material. You may stain your fence whatever color you like to match your backyard, or you can use a clear sealant to protect the natural look and beauty of fresh wood. If left untreated and let to weather, our cedar will gradually fade to a lovely silver-grey hue. Allowing your cedar fence to weather naturally has no effect on the fence's integrity or durability.

Wood Fence Installation Schaumburg IL

Wood Fence Company Schaumburg
Wood fencing is a great option for most suburban homes. It has a natural appearance and is very resistant to abuse. Living in the Chicagoland area however is not too kind to wood fencing. Expect to get a 15-20 year lifespan from cedar fencing. Slightly more for pressure treated pine. If you are okay with the limited lifespan, you have the option of having it stained by us in any color you choose.

The most common cedar fence styles today are horizontal board with staining and aluminum posts. The aluminum fence posts offer more longevity over cedar posts. The most common repair we do on fences are cedar post replacement, so aluminum posts avoids this issue altogether. Most storms will knock over an old cedar fence fairly easily. But having galvanized steel or aluminum posts with cedar pickets should provide you a longer-lasting fence than the traditional styles.

Cedar is the most common type of fencing, but pressure treated pine fencing can also be an option. To learn more about the differences, please visit our page on pressure treated fence.

Wood Fence Styles

There are more than a few options when it comes to fence styles for wood specifically. Wood fences are custom built, and generally adhere to these main styles. There may be slight deviations from these general designs based on the type of posts, post caps, board style, picket top, etc. But the overall concept still applies.

The main fence styles for wood are:
  • Picket fencing - spaces between the pickets also known as picket fence
  • Privacy fencing - no spacing between the pickets
  • Shadowbox Fence / Board on Board - boards overlapping for better privacy or air circulation
  • Horizontal Fence - same as privacy just pickets are flipped horizontally with no spaces between
  • Split Rail Fence - usually used on large stretches of land or simply to partition a property

Horizontal Fence Installation

Horizontal fencing has become extremely popular in recent years. Horizontal Fence have their pickets, or boards, horizontal instead of vertical like your typical fence. Horizontal fencing requires a different type of installation, as well as different materials. The boards that go in between the posts are not your average pickets, they are usually pre-fabricated with a tongue and groove design to overlap and fit together like a puzzle. This results in a higher cost in material and more limited options.

Horizontal Fencing with Metal Posts

Not only can horizontal fencing be a great option, when combined with metal posts, you get the best of both worlds. Metal posts with a cedar fence allows for a fantastic contract with the wood grain, but you also get the increased strength and rigidity of the metal. Metal posts in concrete are a sure fire way to have a strong fence that provides decades of service.

When using metal posts, we usually use either aluminum posts or steel. Aluminum is your most cost effective option, and doesn't rust. Steel is more expensive but offers added strength.
